Benfica midfielder Joao Mario has repeated the club record of the legendary player Eusebio in the Champions League.
It happened in the return match of the 1/8 finals against “Bruges”. In that game, Mario scored a goal.
Thus, the Portuguese scored in his fifth consecutive match in the Champions League. He scored against PSG, Juventus, Maccabi, and Brugge in both games.
The last Benfica player to do so was the legendary Eusebio. He scored in five consecutive European Cup games in 1963-1964.
Mario was brought up by Sporting, for which he made his debut in 2011. Six years later the midfielder was acquired by Inter Milan. As a member of the Nerazzurri Joao did not gain a foothold and subsequently went on loan to West Ham United and Lokomotiv Moscow. The Portuguese now plays for Benfica, which he joined from the Italian side in 2021.
