Katie Boulter and Harriet Dart’s losses destroyed Great Britain’s hopes of causing an upset in their opening match against Kazakhstan at the Billie Jean King Cup finals.
After the Lawn Tennis Association stepped in to host the event at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow, Great Britain was granted a spot in the finals as hosts. However, without the injured Emma Raducanu, the strength of the team is inferior to practically all others.
They were optimistic about their chances of leveraging home-court advantage to pull off an upset on Monday, but Boulter’s 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 loss to the tenacious Yulia Putintseva was a major setback, and Dart was defeated 6-1, 6-4 by Wimbledon winner Elena Rybakina.
