UEFA is set to introduce a groundbreaking innovation in refereeing during Euro 2024, where match referees will explain VAR decisions to team captains. This initiative aims to minimize prolonged disputes between players and referees.
According to The Athletic, referees will communicate their VAR-related decisions directly to the team captains. During this process, other players will be prohibited from approaching the referees and the captains. Players who violate this rule will receive yellow cards.
If the team captain is a goalkeeper, the team will designate an outfield player to communicate with the referee.
This new approach seeks to enhance transparency and understanding of VAR decisions on the field, thereby reducing the tension and confusion often associated with these decisions. By providing clear explanations to the captains, UEFA hopes to foster a more orderly and respectful atmosphere during matches, ultimately improving the overall conduct and flow of the game.
