In the early hours of September 18, 2024, a surprising incident took place at Krakow Airport in Poland involving Oleksandr Usyk, the undisputed heavyweight boxing champion. A video circulating online shows airport security personnel placing handcuffs on Usyk during a misunderstanding at the airport.
According to Usyk’s promoter, the incident was the result of a miscommunication. Usyk was traveling through Poland on his way to Spain to begin training for his highly anticipated fight against Tyson Fury. Accompanied by a friend, Usyk had priority boarding due to his status, while his friend did not. After boarding the plane, Usyk realized that his friend was being denied entry to the aircraft, allegedly due to suspicions of intoxication.
Usyk refused to board the plane without his friend and insisted on staying in the boarding area until the situation was resolved.
The airport’s security team then informed him that if he did not board the flight, they would be forced to handcuff him. Usyk, in a calm manner, offered his hands for the handcuffs.
After further investigation, including a test that did not confirm the security team’s suspicions regarding Usyk’s friend, tensions arose between the airline RyanAir staff and airport personnel. Eventually, the matter was resolved, and Usyk was released without further complications.
This unusual event underscores the importance of clear communication and careful handling in high-profile incidents, especially involving well-known athletes like Oleksandr Usyk.
